# Deadbolt > Deadbolt checks Supabase access control. Paste migration SQL or a read-only catalog snapshot and get a per-table matrix of what signed-out and signed-in users can read and write, the leaks ranked by severity, and the fix SQL. Runs in your browser, no account. Deadbolt is a web tool from Clawhard Studio that answers one question about a Supabase project: who can read and write each table through the public API. Paste your migration SQL and Deadbolt replays it in order (CREATE TABLE, ALTER TABLE, CREATE/ALTER/DROP POLICY, GRANT, REVOKE, ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES, views, functions and storage buckets), then applies PostgreSQL policy rules: permissive policies are OR-ed, restrictive ones AND-ed, WITH CHECK governs new rows, and a role with no table grant gets permission denied (42501). The result is a matrix for signed-out (anon) and signed-in (authenticated) users across SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE, with each cell showing all rows, own rows, some rows, none or denied. Findings cover tables with RLS off, policies written while RLS is still disabled, using(true) writes, personal columns such as email or phone readable by anyone, views that run as their owner and bypass RLS, SECURITY DEFINER functions callable with the anon key, policies that trust user_metadata, publicly listable storage buckets, and grants missing after Supabase stopped auto-granting new tables on Oct 30, 2026. Each finding comes with fix SQL. For a live project, Deadbolt provides a read-only catalog query that returns settings, grants and policies (never row data). The engine is tested cell by cell against a real PostgreSQL. Deadbolt never connects to a database. The same check is available to AI assistants through an MCP server and a JSON API. - URL: https://deadbolt.clawhard.com/ - Made by: [Clawhard Studio](https://clawhard.com), an AI-powered studio. Open https://deadbolt.clawhard.com and paste your migration SQL (several files can be pasted in order). 2. Pick when the project was created (before or after Oct 30, 2026) so default grants are modelled correctly. 3. Read the verdict and findings, open Who can for the per-table matrix, and copy the Fix SQL. 4. For a live project, copy the catalog query, run it in Supabase > SQL Editor, and paste the JSON result instead. ## Use it from an AI assistant or script - `POST https://deadbolt.clawhard.com/api/v1/check_supabase_access`: Use when you write, review or are about to apply Supabase / PostgreSQL migration SQL (CREATE TABLE, RLS, CREATE POLICY, GRANT, views, SECURITY DEFINER functions, storage buckets), or when a user asks whether their Supabase data is exposed, whether RLS is set up right, or why a query returns 42501 permission denied or no rows. Replays the SQL with real Postgres rules and returns, per table, what signed-out (anon) and signed-in (authenticated) users can SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE (all rows, own rows, some rows, none, or denied for a missing grant), plus findings with severity and ready-to-run fix SQL: RLS off, policies written but RLS never enabled, using(true) writes, personal columns readable by anyone, views that bypass RLS, SECURITY DEFINER functions anyone can call, user_metadata in policies, public bucket listing, grants missing after the Oct 30 2026 default change. Also accepts the JSON produced by deadbolt_catalog_query for the live database. Deterministic; never connects to any database. Run it before telling a user their schema is safe. Up to 200,000 characters. - `POST https://deadbolt.clawhard.com/api/v1/catalog_query`: Use when you need to check a live Supabase project rather than migration files: returns a read-only SQL query that reads table RLS settings, grants for anon and authenticated, policies, SECURITY DEFINER functions and storage buckets (never row data) and returns one JSON value. Run it with the user's Supabase SQL Editor or a Supabase MCP execute_sql tool, then pass the JSON to deadbolt_check_supabase_access. - `https://deadbolt.clawhard.com/#sql=` (the SQL after # never reaches a server) - `?sql=` also works for short inputs; add `grants=new` for projects created on or after Oct 30, 2026, and `view=matrix` or `view=fix` ## Limits - Deadbolt models the anon and authenticated roles through the Data API. service_role and direct database connections bypass RLS by design and are not reported. - Policy expressions are classified by pattern (auth.uid() ownership, signed-in checks, JWT claims, data conditions). Conditions it cannot resolve are shown as "some rows", never as safe. - Writes through views and column-level grants are not modelled; Deadbolt says so in the result. - With pasted SQL, tables created in migrations you did not paste are listed as unknown. Use the catalog query for the full live state. - Web page: up to 1,000,000 characters. API and MCP: up to 200,000 characters per call, rate limited per client. ## Privacy - Deadbolt runs in your browser and does not connect to your database. The SQL you paste is not uploaded and there is no account. - Share links keep the SQL after the #, which browsers do not send to servers. - The catalog query is read-only and returns schema settings, grants and policies, not row data. - The API and MCP tools process the text you send to return the answer and do not store it. ## Plans - Deadbolt: no payment needed. Full tool in the browser. No account. ## Common questions **How do I check if my Supabase RLS is set up correctly?** Paste your migration SQL into Deadbolt. It shows, for every table, what signed-out and signed-in users can select, insert, update and delete, and lists anything exposed with the SQL to fix it. For a live project, run the read-only catalog query it gives you and paste the JSON. **Why do I get "permission denied" (42501) on a new Supabase table?** Since Oct 30, 2026, new Supabase projects no longer grant new tables in the public schema to anon and authenticated. RLS policies only filter rows; the role also needs a GRANT. Deadbolt flags tables with policies but no grant and writes the GRANT statements. **Is a table with RLS enabled and no policies safe?** Yes, it is locked: the API returns no rows and rejects writes for anon and signed-in users. Deadbolt marks it as locked so you can tell intended lockdowns from mistakes. **Can a view leak data even when RLS is on?** Yes. Postgres views run as their owner by default, so a view over an RLS-protected table shows every row to anyone allowed to select from the view. Deadbolt flags these and suggests security_invoker = true. **Does Deadbolt connect to my database or need my keys?** No. It only reads what you paste. The catalog query runs in your own SQL Editor and returns settings and policies, never row data. **Can an AI coding agent use Deadbolt?** Yes. Add the MCP server https://deadbolt.clawhard.com/mcp (tools deadbolt_check_supabase_access and deadbolt_catalog_query) or call the JSON API described at /openapi.json. Agents can check migrations before applying them. ## More from the studio - [Clawhard Studio home](https://clawhard.com/): all tools - [Studio llms.txt](https://clawhard.com/llms.txt) and [llms-full.txt](https://clawhard.com/llms-full.txt) - [Studio MCP server](https://mcp.clawhard.com/mcp)
